ABSTRACT

The reinforcement of soft clay by geogrids and stone columns beneath unpaved roads and embankments has been considered. The reinforcement carrying capacity has been evaluated using limit equilibrium method and the theory of strength of materials. A single geogrid placed near the contact between fill and soft clay is not sufficient for embankments. The use of stone column is required in addition. The columns must be reinforced to be able to resist tensile forces arising due to shearing.
