ABSTRACT

Relational supervisors and their trainees will think about this event in the following ways: First, they will need to inhibit their natural tendency to react to what the trainee is exhibiting. They will need to expand their fields of view to the entire training system, that is, all of the individuals in the room in their institutional context because the event involves the entire training system. This is a conceptual step above the common advice given to prospective supervisors: “Know your own stuff.” “Know the trainees’ stuff.” To do this well requires that supervisors think about their own backgrounds, biases, and prejudices as well as helping their trainees examine theirs.
