ABSTRACT

Among all central potential wells the harmonic oscillator potential occupies a special position. As mentioned in the Introduction, it yields the order of single nucleon orbits which, together with a strong spin orbit interaction, give rise to the observed shells in nuclei. The harmonic oscillator potential, being proportional to r 2 does not go to zero for r → ∞. The asymptotic form of the eigenfunctions is not given by exp ⁡ ( − 2 m | E n l | r / ħ ) https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780203739716/ff034a11-a369-4bc6-a470-f8cf1794dcb5/content/eq137.tif"/>
