ABSTRACT
Inverse semigroups were introduced independently by Vagner in 1952 and by Preston in 1954 and hold a special place in semigroup theory. Breakthroughs in the structure theory often occur first in this area, and are later extended to regular semigroups (and, sometimes, nonregular semigroups). The next chapters contain some of these generalizations.
