ABSTRACT
This paper first discusses the performance basis and the resulting seismic design and detailing of concrete structures by the three existing model building codes of the United States. The legal building code of virtually every jurisdiction within the country is based on one of these model codes. The paper then discusses major departures from current requirements and practice for the next generation of building codes that are now in the making.
