ABSTRACT

In this paper a simple and rapid method for the vulnerability and damage assessment of historical buildings in historical city centers is presented. The method is based on the correlation of an integrated pre-event database with the post-event information. The method combines several components within a single user interface environment comprising: remote sensing and earth-science database information, analytical modeling and image processing techniques. GIS technology is used for the storage and analytical computation of data (digitized maps, geographic definitions of earth surface, geological data, etc.) as well as for the development of future earthquake scenarios and possible consequences. The method proposed for the vulnerability and damage assessment of individual structures takes into account all the data available from the databases. Conclusions on the general vulnerability and damage assessment, for a whole urban area, can directly be extracted.
