ABSTRACT

The majority of the world species are in one widespread genus, Glyphipterix, with 276 described species, including the 21 new species added to the genus. The North American fauna of microlepidoptera is relatively poorly known and in Glyphipterigidae several additional new species would be expected with further collecting. South Asia has species of apparently early origin, with some relationship to an unusual species of Glyphipterix from North America. Both the Palearctic and Nearctic regions have large numbers of closely related species in Glyphipterix. The northern Nearctic region, exclusive of Nearctic portions of Mexico, comprises a fauna of 36 species, primarily in Glyphipterix. The western Glyphipterix include several species that appear either very plesiomorphic, with nearest relatives possibly in south Asia, or endemic and relatively isolated in the genus. Subtropical Texas, near Brownsville, has no recorded species of Glyphipterigidae; thus, further collecting there may furnish additions to the North American fauna from northern Mexico or as endemics.
