ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects on diverse experiences of using photographs in an online course about engaging communities. References to existing online photography projects, often with their photographs, were included in the course content as examples of proactive community engagement practice. These projects sought to provide opportunities for individuals to become the originator of images reflecting their own concerns, rather than the objects of others interpretations, so that they may record and catalyze change in their communities. Selective online photography projects were included in the course content because they challenge dominant ideologies of disadvantaged communities, and are of clear relevance to community development. Photographs taken by people around the world addressing issues such as HIV/AIDs, environmental health or economic inequality, were provided within the course materials through links to their websites. Tutors and course participants uploaded and discussed photographs online to promote critical dialogue and the development of an online community of practice.
