ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of a project completed for a masters dissertation, which involved a novel extension of the photovoice methodology, both in terms of the photographic activity and the subsequent analysis. Photo journals were used to capture the experiences of children aged 13-14 with moderate learning difficulties in a special school, with the resulting visual data and associated discussions analysed through an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Interest has grown in eliciting and listening to children's perspectives in relation to their education, and the emphasis has gradually shifted towards positioning children as active participants in the education process. Theme entitled relatedness of experience highlights how school experiences were intertwined with the children's personal interests. The photos that represented this theme included: photos of the curriculum, for example science lessons, filming in English and drama and role play.
