ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on automation as it is used in the tire industry, specifically for both component and whole-tire testing. Several different types of automation are explained, along with the reasons for implementing automation and detailing the components and methods used. The methods discussed in the tire testing automation scheme are already in use in other fields and are familiar to everyone. The chapter presents five areas for pursuing automation in testing: better employee utilization, accuracy, improved data gathering, instant data access, and employee safety. On-vehicle testing is used for tire evaluations of three main types: ride and handling characteristics, treadwear, and durability. The benefits are achieved through more and better information, more accurate testing, and greater productivity, which can be seen in a variety of areas such as manpower utilization, accuracy, and safety.
