ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the impact of marine pollution with special emphasis on the economics of the tourism sector. A survey of the economics of environmental trade-offs sets the stage in the first parts of the chapter for the case studies that follow. The case studies, in turn, deal with island resorts, reefs, and enclosed or semi-enclosed areas. The studies detail the problems of Thailand‘s Phuket and Singapore’s Sentosa islands. Reef-mining and viewing activities are discussed in the context of the Philippines and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Finally, the problems of water quality in the Malacca and Johor straits and in Jakarta and Patong bays are discussed. The chapter concludes with a discussion of common issues.
