ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief overview of the strategy for the application of dispersing by chemical reaction (DCR) technology in the field of environmental remediation. It deals with the cleanup of toxic waste sites and contaminated land, comprising the immobilization and fixation of heavy metals, the immobilization and detoxification of hazardous organic material, and the DCR-supported biological degradation of nonpersistent organics. In order to exclude the unwanted mechanism completely, the solid DCR preparations have always to be made hydrophobic for any application of DCR technology in the field of environmental remediation. For the bituminous fixation agent one uses DCR-dispersed bituminous auxiliary substances in the form of dust-dry solid preparations. The ability of DCR trapping matrices in the form of suspensions to immobilize heavy metals through injection techniques in subsoil or in contaminated soil that, for technical reasons, cannot be excavated, for instance, soil beneath buildings, is a major advantage.
