ABSTRACT
Mine soils have no pedogenic profile development and are characterized mainly by the kind of material extracted and its handling procedures (Macyk, 1987). Sandpits are among the most extensive mine soils in the Canadian province of Quebec. Complete ecosystem restoration is not required under local legislation, but a viable plant cover must be established and maintained when the abandoned pit is not assigned to other uses (MENVIQ, 1984).
