ABSTRACT

The revealing of growth layers in recording structures often requires certain experience and substantial time expenditure. Cementum layers deposit during all of life of an individual. They are normally not subjected to resorption and reconstruction, so cementum growth layers are formed and persist during all the life of an individual. For age determination by number of growth layers, the more suitable recording structure is that for which the period of registration and the record persistence are greatest, and for which sensitivity is relatively low. Annual layers of cementum can be seen most completely in the longitudinal sections of teeth made through the center of the pulp cavity. If a section is made in the proper plane, the pulp cavity is visible nearly up to the end of the root. The number of growth layers in dentin of different teeth of the same animal can be different due to differences in tooth growth rate.
