ABSTRACT

International Business Machine s Corporation's (IBM) international objective is to become and be recognized as the bightechnology company most concerned about the needs of people with disabilities and to use its technology and products to enhance their employability and quality of life. Toward achieving this objective, IBM has established a Special Needs Systems unit whose stated mission is to enhance the quality of life and employability of persons with disabilities through the use of IBM technology. In 1974, through local community service organizations, IBM set up programmer training centers for persons with severe physical disabilities. The IBM Independence Series is a group of products designed to help individuals with disabilities achieve greater personal and professional independence through the use of technology. As early as 1979, IBM strengthened its commitment to assuming an active role in developing products for persons with disabilities by funding research and through joint development projects.
