ABSTRACT

Philip Morris Companies, Inc. is the world's largest producer and marketer of consumer packaged goods, providing over 150,000 jobs worldwide. The company's origin dates back to 1847 when Mr. Philip Morris, a London tobacconist, produced tobacco in a then new form-cigarettes. Philip Morris USA is America's number one cigarette manufacturer. Miller Brewing became part of Philip Morris in 1969 and soon surged into second place among the world's brewers with distribution in approximately 80 countries and territories. Philip Morris's operational diversity offers the opportunity to see how a company with both staff and broad-based manufacturing operations approaches implementing the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This major subsidiary of the Philip Morris Companies manifests the same considerations for persons with disabilities as has been observed in the other subsidiaries. The company's employing persons with disabilities actually predates the ADA.
