ABSTRACT

This paper presents the site conditions, design considerations, proposed construction methods, galleries, upstream facing system, stability analysis, mix design, instrumentation of 107 m high Cindere Dam, as an example of Hardfill (Low cementitoous content RCC) dams. Original dam design was earthfill dam with central clay core on the same axis. After the technical-economical comparison, hardfill dam type has been found most economical dam type. The dam was constructed on a schist foundation.

As it is already known, three dams have been constructed throughout the world with this methodology with this type, which are Marathia and Ano Mera dams in Greece and Moncion Dam in Dominique Republic. Recently, this new dam type has become very popular in Turkey due to the advantages of hardfill dams:

– in areas that lack impervious material,

– in areas where not good foundation conditions exist, and

– in high seismicity regions.

In Turkey, three hardfill dams are under construction and final design of three hardfill dam projects have been completed.
