ABSTRACT

Ueno Dam is a gravity dam with a height of 120 m and a volume of 720,000 m3. On Ueno dam, the Roller Compacted dam concrete (RCD) method was adopted with unit cement content of 100 kg/m3 that was lower than ever in Japan. The desired quality of this concrete was obtained owing to a high sand percentage of 32% and a percentage of about 10% secured for sand of a diameter less than 0.15 mm and compacting with a vibratory roller for 16 times. The quality was verified by the tests which were conducted on voids, density and strength using the borehole core samples taken from the dam. At this paper, besides the mixture design, the relations between the quality control data, the construction condition and the core tests data on Ueno dam are described.
