ABSTRACT

Presa Rompepicos at Corral Des Palmas is a 109 meter high dam with approximately 400,000 cubic meters of RCC. It provides flood protection for city of Monterrey Mexico. It is located just upstream of major populated metropolitan areas.

After years of consideration, the project was authorized for immediate construction so that flood protection could be provided before the next hurricane season. This required starting construction with a valid conceptual design, but before detailed design, a thorough specification, or RCC mix investigations were complete.

By cooperation with the contractor, owner, and designers, ways were managed to finalize design as construction progressed, while achieving functional completion in less than 1 year and also achieving significant savings. A remarkable aspect of this project is that it was the first dam for the contractor and the first project of its type for the owner and many of the designers.
