ABSTRACT

A thorough series of RCC mix design investigations have been completed for the planned Nordlingaalda diversion dam in Iceland. The climate is severe, with many freeze thaw cycles and a damp environment. In order to eliminate seepage, and thereby substantially reduce the potential for freeze damage, a precast panel system will be used at the upstream face of the dam, with an impervious polyvinylchloride (PVC) liner between the panels and the RCC.

Because and durability of the exposed RCC is still a concern, the mix design program considered air entrained RCC and emphasized quality.

The crushed basalt aggregate, blended with natural sand deposits and the good quality Icelandic cement has resulted in very good strengths.
