ABSTRACT

Since the first RCC dams were constructed in the early 1980s, there has been a considerable effort for the optimization of the mixture proportion of RCC for dams throughout the world. RCC is recently used in Iran for construction of Kharkheh diversion dam (PAYPOL dam) and Jahgin dam. For the better understanding of RCC behavior in Iran a research program has been supported by the Research division of Ministry of Energy in Iran. The purpose of the part of this research is to find correlation between effects of different type of cements, pozzolans and aggregate size on the mechanical properties of RCC. Attempt has been made for the optimization of mixture proportions of RCC for the 155-meter Rodbar Lorestan Dam that is in the tender design stage. The laboratory works carried out with 200 RCC specimen using compaction methods in different delay time. In addition, in this research the permeability tests as well as dynamic and static modulus of RCC in different delay time from 15 to 120 minutes has been considered. A large reduction of mechanical properties was observed with increase of compaction delay time for RCC mix. A comparison was made between effects of pozzolans (industrial and natural) showing variation in mechanical properties of RCC. Hence, this research concludes that the construction methods considering rapid compaction is not the best alternatives in to some certain extend.
