ABSTRACT

This chapter provides examples of leadership and explores actions a leader can and should take, particularly in the context of quality. Any attempt to introduce a quality effort to an organization will, of course, require changes throughout the organization—both in personal attitudes and in specific procedures. "Making Change Possible” offers ideas on six specific things a leader can do to help his or her people accept the necessary changes. Executives must take responsibility for the definition, implementation, and continued activity of the quality process. It begins with personal development and learning. Company executives should decide what elements make up a company’s quality process. As with quality, the creation of an organization in which leadership is understood and practiced at every level is both a sound economic investment and a never-ending challenge. It is the growing awareness of the inextricable relationship between quality and leadership that is now positioning America for what Joseph Juran predicts will be a Century of Quality.
