ABSTRACT

The main problems associated with drinking water supply systems in small communities are either that people do not use the system or that the system’s sanitary condition may be endangered. This chapter summarizes general measures that contribute to reaching that sustainability goal. The sustainability of small water supply systems should lead us to the reflection that each of those systems, even the simplest ones, should be sustained in a project developed together with the community. The knowledge gained and the work with the community will make people express their need to install and maintain the system and, therefore, a sustainable supply system will be established. Another aspect of small water supply systems, which should be carefully reviewed to ensure its sustainability, is the management scheme to be adopted for its operation and maintenance. The sustainability of small drinking water supply systems is linked directly to support and supervision schemes.
