ABSTRACT

The US Forces Korea (USFK) consists of 98 US military installations throughout the Republic of Korea (ROK). The ROK is experiencing difficulty in keeping up with the pace of urbanization and the greater need for water works infrastructure. Even ROK municipal systems are becoming reluctant to sell their precious water resource to US military facilities. The Department of Defense requires military installations in foreign nations to adhere to host nation requirements or the environmental regulations in the Overseas Environmental Baseline Guidance Document and any pursuant final governing standards. Many of the daily military activities necessary to support each installation’s mission loom as potential sources of organic contamination. Environmental regulations for military installations in the ROK are the USFK Environmental Governing Standards. The USFK water systems conduct limited raw water quality monitoring. Most source water information is derived from sanitary surveys of the surrounding areas.
