ABSTRACT

North West Water Board (NWWB) supplies over 700,000 consumers throughout its area of jurisdiction. All water supplies are governed by the Water Services Act of 1997. Water supply and sanitation services were dealt with in a fragmented and partially inconsistent manner in provincial ordinances. Quantity and quality of water are inextricably aligned. It is important, indeed, essential to recognize that to ensure safe water supplies to communities, quality must be addressed. A guide for the health-related assessment of the quality of water supplies is used as a tool for water quality control and monitoring. The North West Water Board offers bursary for water care and engineering students on an annual basis. The policy of the government is to fund basic water supplies only. A major problem facing supplies of water is the practice of unauthorized connections. The Water Service Act makes provision for Water Services Authorities to engage competent water service providers in cases of lack of capacity.
