ABSTRACT

This chapter offers the views of the future with caution: the marketplace, the organization of companies, the project manager, and project management tools with caution. The projections offered are educated guesses, but if the future manager is comfortable in the environment created, he/she will adapt well to most course corrections as we forge ahead. The future project manager will be a business person: one who will have the ability to appreciate and use technology advantageously; one who will understand the needs of people in whatever social setting exists. The chapter looks into a basic restructuring of management in manufacturing and contracting organizations to recognize the enormous sums of money that will be committed to new plant construction, perhaps altering forever the classic concept of line organizations. The managers of these complex projects of the future will not be drawn from top management; they will be top management, for in the capital-intensive industries the ascendant path will be project management.
