ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses constructability and explores basic ideas that will make engineering design, procurement, and construction easier, less costly, faster, and safer. Constructability concepts are most rewarding in the construction phase of a project. Construction input has been considered during the planning and early design stages, and there should be no surprises. The arrangement of the equipment required for a project is a key element of the concept of constructability. Layout may be best viewed from the standpoint of accessibility-access for people and construction equipment to the equipment, piping, electrical, and instrumentation systems being installed. Foundation design using the constructability concepts can result in substantial savings. Because of the large quantities involved, piperack work can be the source of substantial savings. Concrete rack supports, poured in a horizontal position, and set into empty holes before pouring the foundation can save both time and money.
