ABSTRACT

The various participants in the execution of a project include the owner, engineering contractors, consultants, licensors, suppliers, vendors, fabricators, construction contractors and usually a number of others. This chapter considers primarily the organization within the contractor's home office. There are two basic organizations normally considered for projects: the matrix and the task force. The contractor's proposed organization and its interfaces should be an important consideration for the owner when selecting a contractor. Owners responded by taking a much more active role in the project execution. Good communication flow and efficiency in execution were greatly enhanced by similar team structures on both sides. One of the necessary elements for success of a project operated by matrix is timely access to the skilled people required. A second important consideration in the use of the matrix organization is the ability of the project team to control the work effort according to the plan.
