ABSTRACT

The objective of expediting is to provide an adequate flow of equipment and material to a jobsite at the required time and in the proper sequence. Some businesses place a higher priority on prompt delivery than others; as a result, expediting systems vary in sophistication ranging from a month-at-a-glance calendar to those that make use of extremely complex computerized tracking systems. Within the larger procurement organizations, there are usually many departments: purchasing, contracting/subcontracting, expediting, inspection, traffic, and material control. To assist in developing a bid list of acceptable suppliers, expediting may perform capability surveys and obtain information on their past and current performance. Expediting also monitors the issue of material requests for quotations and return of supplier quotations in order to support the overall procurement effort. There are two distinct types of expediting: project expediting and area expediting. Although both functions have a common goal, there are significant differences in their mode of operation.
