ABSTRACT

Since project management is an exercise in complex communications, management in a multiproject environment differs from single-project management only in that it involves a significantly higher degree of such complexity. This is apparent when the various types of multiproject environments are defined. A number of concurrent contracts of varying size, for different owner-clients, executed in one office of an Engineer /Procurement /Construction (EPC) contractor. A number of plant elements in a complex grass-roots facility; each engineered, procured, and constructed by separate contractors for one owner-client. A number of concurrently built but separate facilities in a common geographical area, by a number of EPC contractors working under various contract conditions for different owner-clients. For all types of multiproject circumstances the key features of project management are communication, coordination, cooperation, to the optimum benefit of all participating owners and contractors. The influence on the type of contract on multiproject coordination is more important in the field construction phase of the project.
