ABSTRACT

The Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) Design Review Committee initiated a DR survey in September 1987. In 1976 only a narrow range of high-tech companies were using Design review (DR) for new products, and all those surveyed had already sent people to JUSE reliability seminars. The committee covered a much wider field in 1987, including some from the service sector, by sending questionnaires to all JUSE supporting members. Companies in the construction industry, not even included in the 1976 survey, proved to be especially active in DR. While some of their terminology is different, they have picked up DR rather quickly and with good results. The committee broke down all the responses by industry and product categories. The increase in “president” responses shows growing top management commitment to DR.
