ABSTRACT

Statistical models are often simplifications of extremely complicated phenomena and it is a mistake to necessarily assume that any such model is a true representation of the underlying process. What is assumed is that the model is useful for some purpose such as a parsimonious description or predicting future occurrences. Hence selecting a model, irrespective of its truth, that best serves such purposes is the goal of model selection.
