ABSTRACT

Following successful experiences with slag bound material; KCC specified it for A259 Ramsgate Harbour Approach Road. However the contractor proposed the use of crushed granite aggregate bound with PFA activated with lime, known as GFA. Following laboratory trials a pavement design and specification was agreed, based upon the compressive strength of the material after 14 days curing at 40°C. Cores were also taken to monitor in situ strength, complemented by Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing soon after completion and 12 months later. The results confirmed the material to have enough initial strength for construction traffic and opening to traffic and gained strength as predicted to ensure good performance.
