ABSTRACT

The paper reports the results of a study on the transient heat transfer in flexible bituminous pavements, with the aim of a better characterisation of the materials. Heat transmission by conduction within the pavement was studied under variable conditions, numerically integrating the general equation of the conduction with surrounding convection and radiation conditions. Having first schematised the pavement as a mono-layer, the calculations were repeated on a multi-layer schematisation. Comparison between the two demonstrated a substantial uniformity of the temperature profiles obtained. The models are now being validated at an airport in Veneto Region (Italy).
