ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews some of the basic assumptions that are used while applying air stripping technology. Materials of construction include aluminum, stainless steel, coated carbon steel, and fiberglass. Fiberglass and aluminum are the least expensive, with stainless steel and coated carbon steel being slightly higher in cost for most cases. One of the main differences between a cooling tower and a packed tower is that the cooling towers use different packing media. The packing is structured and is placed in the unit as large bricks of media. The water is usually distributed over a film sheeting to enhance air to water contact. When using a cooling tower for volatile organics removal, the air to water contact can be further optimized by removing the commonly used film sheets and spraying the water into the tower.
