ABSTRACT

Traffic management has become an indispensable component of the service offered by a modern road system, especially in densely populated areas and on critical links. Traffic management both promotes increased safety and optimum usage of the existing road (network) capacity and is a source of valuable information for travellers. Tools cover a wide range from lane signalling and ramp metering, to route guidance and road pricing.

Dutch MTM is presented as an example of a state-of-the-art traffic management system, itself focusing on lane control but at he same time providing data to higher-level control and information systems. As a special subject, the specific requirements of permanent cross-river connections on traffic management are discussed.

Expected trends for the future are standardisation, integration, network management, in-car systems and growing consumer influence on ITS.
