ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the application of nonlinear Lp-norm estimation to practical problems. Applications to be considered include the modelling of certain physiological processes of interest in medical research, for example respiratory physiology and pharmacology, as well as a two-equation econometric model of production data. It is interesting that ail these nonlinear models were generated as the analytical solutions to ordinary differential equations. The chapter demonstrates that the adaptive Lp-norm estimation procedure can select a value of p close to 1. B. E. Rodda et al. considered the effect of outliers on least squares estimation in the one compartment model. E. L. Frome and G. J. Yakatan adjusted their data to contain certain patterns of outliers and suggested that L1-norm estimation should be used. In bioavailability studies compartmental models are used. One such compartment, the vascular compartment contains the drug and carries it to another compartment the tissue.
