ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the problem of the riser and presents a generalized approach to develop the governing equations of motion for a riser type structure. It focuses on the specific problem of modeling the large amplitude elastic vibration of a fluid conveying pipe, with an eye toward characterizing its dynamic behavior. The chapter investigates response of the riser to different environmental conditions and different physical parameters. Also, response in the presence and absence of internal fluid flow is compared. The intention is to use the term riser in its most general sense. Flexible risers have found a broad range of applications, from pressure vessels to offshore production and transport facilities. The dashed line represents the riser with zero internal flow velocity, while the dotted line is for nonzero internal flow. The purpose is to develop a reasonable analytical model for the nonlinear response of fluid conveying risers.
