ABSTRACT

A baseline is simply a measure of the amount of material purchased, or waste generated, from a specific process, during a specific period of time. It's usually measured in weight or volume. The baseline should consist of iterative steps of gathering data from records reviews, then analyzing and sorting the data, followed by conducting site visits to verify data, fill the data gaps, and interview process owners. A key element in implementing the baseline is receiving management support through the commitment of the necessary resources to support the assessment activities. The baseline assessment team should be led by the Environmental Management System (EMS)/P2 coordinator. The data-gathering step begins with document research and is followed by an analysis of these documents. The amount of waste generated and hazardous material used is directly linked to production quantities.
