ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author aims to provide reports of students and professionals with an example which they could use as an outline to help them develop their Environmental Management System (EMS) manual and their P2 implementation plan. In fact, the EMS should link to other strategic planning initiatives through the policy statement, key focus areas, and goals. Strategies are the actual steps student and professional reporters will go through to complete the objectives. An "owner" must be identified for every waste stream, process change, and initiative in order to measure the improved process and achieve the objectives. The EMS manual is a very important document which links together the numerous policy statements, goals, management plans, permits, records, training reports, and other formal documentation required to effectively lead an environmental management program. As student and professional reporters have learned, an effective EMS should be based on pollution prevention and continuous improvement.
