ABSTRACT

In the town of Leeds in Yorkshire, there once lived a quack who had received no professional instruction whatever, but was known far and wide for his wonderful cures, and especially for his power of diagnosing the diseases of patients whom he had never seen by simply examining their urine. A celebrated surgeon, Mr X, wishing to see his method of working, desired to be present one day, and the quack readily acceded to his request, feeling much flattered that so great a man should patronise him. Shortly after Mr X had taken his seat a woman came in with a bottle of urine, which she handed to the quack. He looked at her, then at the bottle, held it up between him and the light, shook it, and said ‘Your husband’s?’.
