ABSTRACT

The eminent physiologist Rudolf Virchow criticised the German Chancellor Bismarck who challenged him to a duel. Since Virchow was the challenged, he chose the weapons. He held up two large sausages and said ‘One contains the germ of trichinosis and the other is harmless. Let his Excellency choose and eat and I will eat the other’. Bismarck decided to laugh off the affront—and the duel.
