ABSTRACT

Most medical school museums have a collection of foreign bodies which have been introduced by one means or another into the rectum and, for example, in Westminster’s museum there is an oven door handle with a label attached to it stating that ‘an unmarried man of 42 admitted that the introduction of the handle was intended to produce an erotic sensation and that he denied ever having done this before’. There was also the case of the 54 year old company director who attended the Westminster casualty department with the story that he had sat on a rubber truncheon which disappeared up his back passage and could not be retrieved. He was somewhat reticent about details and further enquiries were not pressed.
