ABSTRACT

In 1897 a patent was registered in London by G Izambard, which related to a method of reproducing a large number of copies of writing, or printing, by printing on photographic paper using Röntgen rays. Izambard intended the process to take the place of letterpress printing for newspapers, using an ink opaque to X-rays. This did not work! However, radiography of documents was attempted and a radiograph of a will within a sealed envelope is shown below. This was intended to demonstrate the possibility of reading sealed documents.
