Professor Nernst liked to 'spice' his lectures with many interesting stories, anecdotes, and jokes. We, as students, appreciated this habit tremendously and I remember that even his first assistant, when he had to take over the lecture in the absence of Professor Nernst, used to say, 'At this particular point, Professor Nernst likes to tell such-and-such a story.' One story I remember went something like this:
