ABSTRACT
Prof. M L McGlashan (of University College London) in-formed us of 'the misleading hoax about "Monsieur Litre" perpetrated in Chemistry International 1980, No. 1, p. 32'. Stating that the story is completely untrue and probably originated as a joke, he wrote to say 'It is almost unbelievable that so many otherwise reputable scientists should be so gullible as to swallow such an article, but I am sick and tired of pointing out to the convinced that it was a spoof. What it must have done to less sophisticated scientists!'
