ABSTRACT
Changes of idiom between generations are a normal part of social history. Previously, however, such changes and the verbal provocations of young against old have been variants on an evolutionary continuum. What is occurring now is new; it is an attempt at a total break. Deliberate violence is being done to those primary ties of identity and social cohesion produced by a common language.
