ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a discussion of significant regulatory programs that acted as the drivers for the industry and the rationale behind them. It discusses some of the fundamentals of environmental remediation, including site investigation, contaminant fate and transport, and remedial technology selection. The chapter also discusses the advances that occurred as the industry progressed are discussed. It addresses the factors that create uncertainty and risk in cleaning up a contaminated site. The chapter also provides a number of strategic planning guidelines. These guidelines draw upon the fundamental concepts of environmental remediation and work to address the issues of uncertainty and risk. In order to address concerns and criticisms such as those listed above, regulatory agencies are constantly modifying environmental regulations and new amendments to environmental legislation are continually being enacted.
