ABSTRACT

According to the physical law of inertia, a body in motion tends to remain in motion and a body at rest tends to remain at rest. A scientist once performed an experiment to see whether goldfish could remember things. First he built a glass tank with a glass barrier in the middle; in the center of the barrier he made a hole large enough to for a goldfish to swim through. Force of habit led the goldfish to persist in its old behavior despite a change in the situation. Surely, humans too, are affected by the force of habit. In the early stages of improvement, however, it can be effective to use a "dynamite hole" approach. Since improvements to a greater or lesser extent demand new procedures, a certain amount of difficulty will be encountered and a certain amount of time will be needed to decide how to carry out those new procedures and then to memorize them.
