ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of research on the production of smokeless fuel from high-volatility coal. Laboratory scale investigations on coal samples from various countries provided the basic data for the construction of a test plant, which is currently in operation in Malaysia. The overriding aim of this research was to design an environmentally friendly and commercially viable technology to produce smokeless fuel as substitute for firewood and raw coal, which are used in numerous countries for heating and cooking with harmful ecological effects. The main findings of the laboratory scale research are outlined and the plant technology and test results obtained are described. In addition, preliminary results of ongoing research to optimize the technology are presented.
